The 8th Duke of Argyll and his like-minded aerial navigation enthusiasts formed the Society in 1866 to promote heavier-than-air flight. The Washington Branch of the RAeS was inaugurated to serve the Washington area on 17 December 2003 , the centenary of the Wright Brothers’ manned flight. The aims of the branch are to stimulate advances in aviation safety and technology by providing a forum to improve further the technical, political and social interchange between the US and UK aerospace communities. The lecture meetings and the receptions beforehand provide a good opportunity for interdisciplinary discussions .
